The Story Behind Lode Light Guides - Finding Clarity After Loss

When someone you love passes away, there's the heartbreak itself — and then, almost immediately, the flood of decisions. What to do first. Who to call. How to honor them. It's one of those moments that changes everything, and yet there's no guidebook waiting to show you what comes next.

That's how Lode Light Guides began — not as a business idea, but as a quiet realization that too many families are left to navigate loss alone.

When Loss Becomes a Turning Point

The idea first took root when Mark's dad passed away. He was the first to go, and like most families, we were completely unprepared for the sheer amount of work that followed. There were calls to make, papers to find, and details that seemed endless. Even with love and patience, it was overwhelming. We often said, "I wish there was a checklist for all this."

That moment stayed with us.

A Weekend That Changed Everything

A few years later, life had returned to its normal rhythm. During a Thanksgiving visit to my parents' home, something unexpected happened. Their neighbour of fifty years was being moved into a nursing home. From across the street, we watched as her family — clearly heartbroken — began throwing all of her belongings into a dumpster. Old furniture, photo albums, pieces of a life well lived. Everyone was emotional, and no one knew what else to do.

That scene stopped us cold. We realized that so many people go through this — and simply don't know where to start. There was no calm, compassionate roadmap to help families through these moments with care.

Lighting the Way Forward

That night, the idea for Lode Light Guides finally took shape: a practical, printable resource designed to guide families step by step through the tasks that follow a parent's passing — from organizing documents to managing estates and preserving memories.

We wanted it to feel less like a legal checklist and more like a companion — something that lights the path forward, even in the heaviest times.

"Lode" is an Old English word meaning path or way. "Light" represents clarity, guidance, and hope. Together, they became our name — a small light to follow when everything else feels dark.

What Our Guides Cover
